In the winter, ceiling fans recirculate heat into the living areas & can reduce your energy bill by up to 10%.  Remember to reverse the fan motor in the winter months.  Ceiling fans come with forward & reverse settings.  Use the forward setting in the summer to blow cool air down into the room and the reverse setting in the winter to circulate warm air
